Emergency Response TankTrainer™ Session
In 2018, GATX enters its 25th year of offering our TankTrainer™ program to customers, railroads, and first responders. TankTrainer™ is a hands-on training program that is part of our ongoing commitment to attaining the highest level of safety, quality, and environmentally responsible performance. “Safety has always been core to GATX and having a first-class training program is just a piece of the overall best-in-class service we aim to provide,” said Robert Zmudka, Vice President and Group Executive, North American Sales and Marketing.
In October 2014, GATX partnered with BNSF Railway and U.S. Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp to host a railcar safety training event for emergency responders in Fargo, North Dakota. We were proud to offer our expertise and our TankTrainer™ to ensure local emergency responders received hands-on training on the proper use and handling of railcars. Together with BNSF Railway, our training aimed to safeguard the communities where we operate and to protect police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical service providers by teaching emergency responders how to prepare for, and respond to, hazardous materials transportation incidents.
"It's the oldest cliché in the world, but knowledge is power," said Cass County North Dakota Sheriff Paul Laney at the Fargo TankTrainer event. “Knowing the dangers of what's inside that car is critically important.”
The TankTrainer™ is a 33,500-gallon tank car outfitted with a variety of fittings, coatings, and configurations that allows trainees to access the interior and top of the tank car for a hands-on learning experience. Since its inception in 1993, we have offered over 288 mobile training events at customer sites or at our shops, providing a one-of-a-kind learning experience to more than 17,000 employees, customers, rail and yard workers, and emergency responders.
